Since the release of The Secret movie a few years ago, the "Law of Attraction" has become more mainstream. But where did this law, and all it speaks of, come from?
Well, it was not invented by Rhonda Byrne, the producer of The Secret, or by any of her many guests (Joe Vitale, Bob Proctor, Bill Harris and others).
And while it's worth noting that The Secret movie (and Rhonda Byrne's book by the same name) definately gave the law a huge boost in popularity, the philosophy behind it has actually been around for at least a hundred years.
A Law is Born
In the early 1900s, the New Thought movement often used the term "Law of Attraction". Since then, other authors referred to it or presented similar positive thinking methods, including:
- Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich)
- Wallace Wattles (The Science of Getting Rich, which was also the inspiration for The Secret)
- Florence Scovel Shinn (The Game of Life and How to Play It)
- Louise Hay (You Can Heal Your Life)
- Esther and Jerry Hicks channelling Abraham (Ask and It Is Given)
- Joe Vitale (The Attractor Factor)
In "The Game of Life and How to Play It," Florence Scovel Shinn explains the law as follows:
The invisible forces are ever working for man who is always 'pulling the strings' himself, though he does not know it. Owing to the vibratory power of words, whatever man voices, he begins to attract.
Others explain the Law Of Attraction as follows:
- Know exactly what you want.
- Ask the Universe for it.
- Feel, behave and know as if the object of your desire is on its way.
- Be open to receive it and let go of (the attachment to) the outcome.
A Marriage of Law and Affirmations
As you can see, this philosophy maps onto the use of affirmations. Plus, if you've been using affirmations already but have not yet learned much about the Law of Attraction, it doesn't really matter. Why?
Because the law is always working in the background, and always has been regardless of your knowledge of it.
The bottom line is that by focusing on certain things (by using affirmations or another method), those things seem to appear more often than not.
The Best Approach of All
But, as usual, the best approach is to try it for yourself and see.
And a great way to start trying it is by using the following affirmation:
I am open to new ways of knowing how affirmations can work for me.
